another open sorority expansion

by: Greek Grapevine

I heard it from the Greek grapevine that the PHA is considering another open expansion. It was posted on GreekChat. Is it true?

It's most likely true. It's no secret that IU wants all 26 sororities to be on campus. However, after Sigma Kappa the only sorority of any national strength is Tri Sigma. SK will make 23 and the only sororities left will be Tri Sigma, Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Sigma Sigma.

That means there will be more unhoused sororities at IU.

It's not confirmed that IU is open, but like probs said, they do want all 26 groups. Except none of the remaining groups, Tri Sigma included, have any national strength.

Nationally, Phi Sig is stronger than all of the three unhoused chapters currently at IU. However, they have rejected IU's expansion offer a few times because they are currently working on their weak active chapters.

How can you say Phi Sigma is stronger than other groups and then say they can't open a colony because they're working on all their weak chapters? That makes no sense. If they have this amazing strength you speak of they should be able to do both.

Tri Sig has their chapter at UVA to recolonize before they wade into anything here if ever.

You think Tri Sigma would want to come next because they really aren't expanding anywhere else right now. They were supposed to colonize at Kansas State, but it didn't work out. They just recolonized at USI and they don't have houses, so it couldn't have cost that much.

Phi Sigma Sigma recolonized at Illinois last year. There are lots of Chicago people at IU, so some of the region people may have heard of them.

Honestly, there is definitely a difference between ASA, AST, DPhiE, Phi Sig Sig, Tri Sigma, AEPhi, TPA, SDT and the rest of the NPC groups. Those 8 are significantly smaller/weaker than the rest. Who's the strongest among those 8? Hard to say, but it's kinda just semantics. Those groups just have less chapters AND/OR are at small niche schools as opposed to the big schools. They just have less money for colonies.

Tri Sigma struggles at big schools, they pulled out of Kansas State because there wasn't enough interest. They struggle at Mizzou and UNC.

Phi Sigma Sigma just re-organized their chapter at Illinois and recolonized at Penn State. Whether they would want to take on another huge colonization like IU, who knows? If they do, I wouldn't expect them to have a house for a long while.

I can't speak to AST but they aren't big on colonies. Check greekchat and see how many places they've even decided to present since 2008. Not very many.

I get so sick of people trying to say one or the other of these groups is so much better than another one in this cluster. It's just not so. They all joined NPC late in the game and never got completely caught up. The only way they could have is if the other NPC groups would have bowed out of expansion for 10-15 years.

Good post. ^^

I think AST moved its national headquarters to Indianapolis a few years ago to be with the other nationals. I think they want to become stronger, they did colonize at USI two years ago, and they did submit interest when DPhiE did. They might surprise everyone and submit again. I think if anyone submits, it might be them.

It's suprising how many Greeks don't know that Tri Sigma has a closed chapter at IU. They actually closed the same time as SK and AOPi( which recolonized early 2000s)
