Fourth, Hazing. Hazing is illegal, but hazing exists regardless. I will not advocate for or against hazing. Some people will say it serves an important function in unifying a pledge class and the fraternity through conquering common trials, others will say a brotherhood that unites based on humiliation and slave-labor is only pseudo-unification that does not create nearly the same unification and brotherhood that mutual respect and common values does. Know what you believe, and know what each fraternity believes.
Lastly, the future. Regardless of which fraternity you join, you will decide its future. The older brothers of a fraternity will often ask you to carry on the traditions and reputation of the fraternity, but the future is ultimately up to you and your pledge class. Additionally, stereotypes will come and go, they change as the people in the fraternity change. So if you see an aspect of a fraternity that could be improved upon, especially a frats reputation, don’t immediately see it as a flaw. Because when you join the fraternity, you and your pledge class will get to choose to uphold the traditions your proud of, and change the ones you’re not.
