The hardest part of the transition from drinking club to a substance-free service organization is making this philosophical shift in the membership and community. Most of our former members didn’t sign up for a dry chapter house with no pong tables or Fireball shots. The National fraternity is supporting chapter leaders who are really bought in to making SigEp a substance-free chapter on our campus. We can be confident that SigEp is on the right path. It will somewhat different, and certainly a lot less risky social program than before, but it will be an even stronger brotherhood with real accountability when brothers make bad choices.

SigEp stands out as a forward-thinking fraternity in all issues, including gender. SigEp has traditionally treated gender as binary, when we live in a world with increasing awareness that gender is not always binary. SigEp’s membership is currently restricted those persons who identify as male, but there is limited space in Greek communities across the country for non-binary individuals to engage.
SigEp is leading the way towards the future of Greek organizations in the United States as gender inclusive organizations. SigEp is convening a task force to explore removing any screening of gender from its membership criteria and this would also expand SigEp’s recruitment pool.

SigEp's Balanced Man Program (BMP) is structured to enable leaders and members to hold other members accountable. One of the outcomes of our chapter adopting the BMP is that members are more likely to not offer bids to prospective members who express highly social interactions that involved alcohol. As prospective members who want primarily social aspects of membership are less likely to return for follow-up events, the men who do return show greater interest in campus involvement and leadership through the Balanced Man Program. The recruitment process with the BMP is far more like a job interview where the members were encouraging prospective members to tell about their motivations for their undergraduate experience and reasons for personal involvement.
