ethical or nah?

Is it ethical for your sorority to heavily fine you if you aren't able to raise a certain amount for Dance Marathon?

Yes, why force people into charity, that totally defeats the purpose.

Tricky question. Technically, if it's in your chapters bylaws to raise a certain amount then it's ethical since you are agree to their terms by being a member. However, I don't exactly think it's right. I know part of being in a sorority is being philanthropic, but I would much rather support a philanthropy of my choosing rather than being forced to raise money for dance marathon. Don't get me wrong, it's a great cause, but I personally would rather support my chapters own philanthropy since it means more to me. Being "forced" to raise money is kind of the opposite of philanthropy. This is honestly what I hate about the competitive nature of dance marathon. Yes, it ends up with us raising millions, but it's partially because people are forced to raise a certain amount when they really don't care about the cause.

Dang, I was not expecting 21 upvotes in the matter of like 4 hours but I appreciate the support since I really and truly glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about DM. I really do wish my chapter cared about our own philanthropy even half as much as we support DM. I agree, it is truly sad.
