affiliation

by: PotentialTransfer

Hey everyone. I'm currently a Zeta at an SEC university. I hate my school but I love Zeta Tau Alpha. I'm definitely transferring after spring semester and I am seriously considering NYU. I have some questions...
What is Zeta like at NYU?
What is the general Greek scene like there? How does it compare to the SEC?
Does ZTA generally accept transfers for affiliation?
Thanks!

zta is very strong at nyu, classy above all and very decent looking
on the other hand nyu greeklife kinda blows, however, it is growing at a very fast rate amd zta is probably the best out of anything here, except maybe for dphie

I have no idea if ZTA accepts transfers, but Greeklife as a whole at this school has much lower standards than what I'm sure you're used to at yours. You can probably use Facebook to message the chapter if you have questions.

Zeta has done well recently. Since joining the national organization, they've enjoyed a tremendous boost in funding which has allowed them to do well in recruiting and sisterhood events. They took a 70-person pledge class their first year as part of Zeta, and it was a more attractive bunch than most other sororitys. That being said, it is NYU, so nothing worth writing home about.

In short, they seem on the classier side, prettier side (speaking purely in relative terms), and are definitely on the larger side in terms of chapter size.

ZTA typically only accepts freshmen because they're a popular sorority here, but you can message their president and ask them directly. Greek life is 12% of the population, so although it is small, it's very active, as there are thousands of students in it because there are 40,000 people here and 12% of 40,000 is like almost 5,000 people. I'm in Greek life and I'm always busy with Greek stuff. It's different than SEC though; mixers are typically at bars, clubs, or apartments, so you'll need an ID usually, and people aren't is into theme parties.

I'm at zeta here at NYU :) I pledged as a freshmen but we take maybe 5 or so sophomore each PC, never juniors or seniors. HOWEVER, you are a sister of zeta so just contact our president through facebook (her name is Nicole Gartside) she's lovely. Greek life at NYU isn't huge, but it's strong and tight-knit. We all mix a lot but at apartments or bars like someone else said. Lambda theta is very involved around campus and we have tons of events and sisterhood. I chose zeta and I couldn't be any happier. Just to clarify, NYU Greek Life comprises only ~7% of the student population.

It was 10% two years ago and it was 12% last year. I don't think the stats are out for this year yet.

That's probably with ALL greek letter orgs, social orgs (ifc, panhel, mgc) comprise 7%

There are 40,000 students at this university counting graduate students (who are 45-50% of the student body). Taking the median of the three figures provided (7, 10, and 12), we can say that roughly 2,000 students are involved in Greeklife. That number still seems high to me; I wonder if that includes all the academic societies that use Greek letters.

There's a few untrue things in the post above mine. My former roommate is in ZTA and I asked her about this. I can't comment on the sisterhood because I'm not in ZTA but my roommate says she likes it so there's that. Secondly, they are competitive, so they do try to take freshmen, but the 2012-2013 new member class had at least 2 sophomores, my roommate thinks there might be 3 or 4 but she's unsure. Lastly, the one year membership thing is untrue; you can drop whenever you want. The new member chair will, of course, try to talk you out of it, as any new member chair of any sorority would, but people can and have drop out of any sorority at NYU at any time.

Above is right. I'm from the 13 PC and one girl dropped... I didn't even know she was a part of our pledge class until I looked back and the bid day pics and didn't even realize who she was. I love being in ZTA and each chapter at each sorority has its ups and downs I feel

again, there's a difference between dropping as a pledge and an active member, especially in ZTA. And ZTA members have bragged about having 100% freshman class, so that statistic comes directly from chapter reps.

Don't transfer to NYU, that's a downgrade where you're coming from. SEC greek life is the best in the country while NYU is arguably the worst. You'll end up very disappointed.

It's like going from having Filet Mignon everyday to having soy burgers. And everyone knows soy burgers taste like ass.
