Does having recs actually help you if you don’t know anyone here?

How much it helps is debatable. But not having one will certainly hurt you. The easiest thing to cut a PNM for is not having a rec and there are chapters on campus whose nationals require a rec to pledge. DG is one of those houses - so it’s not even that it will hurt you with just the top tiers by not having one.

some chapters will keep you longer with a rec! So many girls rush that every little thing can help

While it may or may not help you in the end, you should still treat them as required and get one for everyone
