Not well respected at all. The only people who like the Greeks at JMU, are the Greeks.

James Madison is right at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Greek life. Nothing special about it, anyone can get a bid, the process is super easy, 97% of the girls are very shallow. Wouldn't waste ur time money and effort like I did.

Harrisonburg has made it unnecessarily hard for greek life to thrive lately, but there are still overall really fun parties here. Sororities don't haze, and tend to have ~200 girls each, and frats are more around 60-80 guys each, so there's a good girl to guy ratio at most parties. Definitely not the same as southern greek life or anywhere near it, but as far as Virginia goes, JMU Tech and UVA are about as good as it gets.

There's just nothing special here, like said in previous posts- anyone can get a bid. JMU just isnt on the same college level as schools with ACTUAL great Greek life so not having actual houses is minor to overall

not having big houses with letters on them definitely hurts jmu greek life. It's hard to establish a good reputation when fraternities houses often switch hands and everyone has like 5. Rush here is very different from other schools especially for guys it doesn't make sense how anyone meets the rushees before you give them a bid. Parties are fun tho till the cops shut them down.

Don't bother rushing at a school like this, not worth it. Sooo much drama.

Fraternities and sororities are very involved on campus. I feel like the whole social scene at JMU revolves around greek life. Most people go to the fraternities rather than off campus parties. I agree with the comment below, greek housing isn't the best which I believe is really holding JMU back. I definitely recommend anybody considering rushing to rush! I feel like JMU acts like only 15% of students are in greek life so you don't feel as pressured join (when it feels like a lot more than that). Fraternities have rush every semester while sorority rush is in the fall (2nd or 3rd week into the semester). As a freshman I didn't participate in sorority rush as I was so overwhelmed with acclimating to the school, the work load, and frankly rushing was the last thing on my mind. Once all my friends rushed and joined sororities, I immediately regretted it. I felt as if they all immediately found their group of friends and always had things planned so I didn't get to see them as much. When you are a new member you are SUPER busy. As a new member you have to attend many mandatory events and activities (so you have to juggle that with your school work). Also, when you are a new member you want to get to know the girls in your pledge class/sorority so you want to spend a lot of time with them and get to know them. After waiting a year, I joined a sorority this past fall as as sophomore and couldn't be happier! I know this sounds so cliche but I feel like I have finally found a close group of friends that are so loving and supportive of each other. I always have someone to hang out, eat lunch with, etc. Not only have I met tons of girls through joining a sorority but I also have met many guys in greek life through social events! Even though I had to wait a year, I feel like it was worth it and have found my "home" at JMU. The process of rushing is exhausting but joining greek life has totally changed my experience here and I highly encourage anyone who is on the fence about doing it to rush! That obviously goes for the guys as well! Lmao I know that was like an essay but just wanted to help
