UT is way way way different from any SEC school because recruitment is very traditional and old-school and it's not likely to change because the university is very hands off when it comes to Greek Life. For one thing, during summer orientation, actives will invite PNMs to have ice cream and to fraternity parties at night. It's all technically illegal but everyone turns a blind eye. Also, because like 85% of PNMs are from in-state, everyone knows who you are and what kind of high school you went to, so connections are so much more important. You might have heard of Letters of Support which is alums basically adding their name on someone's letter of recommendation, and you're trying to find as many as possible. So you're not looking at 1 or 2 alums, girls are looking for 10-15 alums to back them up. The way it's done at Texas really isn't for everyone, that's why a lot of girls aren't prepared and drop. It's not so much "unclassy" as it is making sure that your PC is only the girls that you could see fit in your sorority. It doesn't force sororities to take girls "because they have to" like they do here. Now is it the "right" thing? Maybe, maybe not. But that's just how the girls keep PCs smaller and more exclusive when you've got a ton of girls signing up for rush.
