Part of it is that in-state girls look up to their older classmates who pledged certain sororities. Imagine if all your mentors, camp counselors, babysitters, tutors, team captains, etc grew up and went to ABC at Alabama. You look up to those girls. When you were younger you couldn't wait until you could graduate and be just like them, because they are so awesome. Now it's finally your turn and you decide to go to Alabama too. Now, where do you want to pledge now? The new row house you've barely heard of OR the old row house where every cool older girl you've ever known has pledged? Especially with social media these days, girls from Bham and Mobile especially spend ALL of high school watching all the coolest college girls they know have an amazing time in a few select houses. Makes perfect sense why they'd want to follow in those girl's footsteps and get the college experience they've been watching on Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat for years.
