Recruitment Faux Pas And How To Recover From Them

Brace Yourself Sorority Recruitment Is Coming

Going through recruitment as a freshman, I noticed that even the most laid back girls in my corridor slowly started turning into nervous wrecks. I couldn’t blame them- it was a little bit of an intimidating process. As a member going through recruitment on the other side, it is just as, if not more, terrifying. I would actually compare it to a wedding because of the similar stress-levels; appearances must be always on point; and everyone’s yelling/crying/both.  And despite everyone trying their best, both current members and PNMs experience similar (horrifying) problems. But don’t worry- I’ve got you covered.

Problem: Remembering their name

Everyone has had that mini-heart attack when you’re talking to a girl and you realize that you forgot what her name was. As a current member, you’re expected to memorize basic facts about the girl you walk in, so it’s a little easier. But as a PNM, you could be talking to over twenty girls, which makes it more difficult.

Solution: Really listen for her name when she introduces herself to you. Make sure your response includes her name (“Hi, I’m Katie!” “Hi Katie, I’m Chelsea, nice to meet you!”). If you don’t remember her name by the end of conversation, you can always glance at their nametag- that’s what they’re there for. Some experts also suggest that it’s easier to remember a new name when you meet someone if you can associate them with a family member or friend with the same name.

Problem: Awkward silences

You know that moment when you know you need to keep talking to someone, but the conversation isn’t really going anywhere, so you just smile and nod and hope that you can Irish-exit your way out of the situation? Yeah, you’re not the only one. Fortunately, this won’t happen often during recruitment, but if it does, there’s a quick fix for it.

Solution: Have about 3-5 different topics in mind that you could easily start talking about. A few examples would be: favorite hobbies, favorite shows/books/movies, or what they’re most excited about this semester. You would be surprised what you two have in common!

Problem: The obligatory aches and pains

Murphy’s Law comes into play during recruitment more than any other time of year. You could plan out the most flawless rush process, but between headaches, heel aches, upset stomachs, and the plethora of other things that could happen,  it could turn out to be an unfortunate experience if you’re not properly equipped. Expect the worst, but be prepared for it.

Solution: Make an “emergency recruitment box” filled with things that will help you survive the week. Here’s a quick list of what to include: Painkillers like Advil/Tylenol, Tums, hand sanitizer, Band-Aids, spare pantyhose (trust me), safety pins, hair ties, bobby pins, mints, and snacks for between rounds.

No matter how worried or stressed you are about recruitment, just keep in mind that it’s only a week. And at the end, you’ll get a group of kickass new sisters to love, and it will all be worth it.
