Here's a fresh idea for the next time your chapter wants to gain some publicity for a philantrophy event...pick a world record and try to break it.

The Brothers of Zeta Phi Rho the University of Southern California attempted to break the word record for the most number of sandwiches made in one hour. Though it may seem like this is all fun and games, the fraternity made sure it was for a good cause: to fight homelessness.

Zeta Phi Rho have hosted it’s annual “Zeta Phi ‘Skid’ Rho” event for fourteen years. The event was created to feed the homeless in the downtown Los Angeles area known as “Skid Row.” This area had the country’s largest population of homeless people, with numbers reaching up to 6,000.

The fraternity previous broke the record for most sandwiches made in an hour back in 2014. They made 17,341 sandwiches. This year, they made approximately 400 sandwiches per minute. Though the fraternity didn’t break the record, or reach their goal of 20,000 sandwiches, the event was still deemed a success.

All of the sandwiches made were donated to the Union Rescue Mission in Skid Row. The brothers hope that this annual event will help solve Los Angeles’ homeless problem by feeding them, as well as raising awareness.
Last week the event drew crowds from all over Los Angeles. Students from other schools and other chapters of Zeta Phi Rho turned up to support the event. They had over 450 volunteers sign up to make sandwiches, but as per The Guinness Book of World Records’ guidelines, only 350 could participate.

The event was sponsored by 7-Eleven, Ono Hawaiian BBQ, Coca-Cola and Frito Lay. As the participants finished the event, the brothers of Zeta Phi Rho urged people to sign their petition to help improve mental health facilities in downtown Los Angeles.
