College is a time of learning. Trust that this learning extends far outside the classroom. More than any year, the first year on campus will have the most extra-curricular lessons. Freshman need to learn quick, or college might swallow them whole. In order to get freshman prepared for the first fall semester of their undergraduate careers, here is a list of some of those lessons they should be preparing to learn as quickly as possible.

The first year of college is scary, confusing, fun, irritating, and bad. These adjectives are among the many that describe a freshman’s first year in college. A college freshman will learn the following:

How to accept they are back at the bottom - Just 4 months ago a college freshman was a high school senior. They were the big fish in the little pond. Now they are minnows in an ocean.

How make their own schedule - A college freshman oversees making and organization their own schedule. There are no parents around to make sure they are where and when they need to be. This will be the first time in their lives they get to prioritize their lives on their own.

How to become their own gps and navigation - No one is going to show them their classes or pat them on the back if they enter the wrong classroom. No one is going to show them around campus. They are expected to learn all of this themselves.

How to be fine with their first romances hooking up their friends - Many college freshman get excited when they met their first college boyfriend/girlfriend. They think the world is getting more perfect and wedding bells are near, but the reality is that the relationships will come and go. They should expect that at some point their first love hook up with one of their friends.

How to face temptation - In college, there is a lot of peer pressure and some new college students pick up different habits. Some of these habits are drinking, smoking, casual sex, and partying. Additionally, in college, a freshman lives at their own risk and will need to learn how to control themselves when faced with temptation.

How to change sleeping habits - College students will work more at night than during daylight. The normal hours for a freshman will start to become midnight and throughout the night. Not many college students go to sleep at 8pm or 10pm.

College is a fun place for a freshman to grow and face personal challenges. Furthermore, attending a higher education institute will teach a them how to become independent without their parent or guardian being around 24/7. Even if the challenges are bad or good, a freshman will eventually graduate and come out of college full of life’s lessons.
