Suicide, not alcohol, is the second leading cause of death among college students. According to the Active Minds organization, 1,100 college US students take their own lives every year. Over the next couple months campuses nationwide will be calling on students to participate in an event that will shed light on this alarming reality. Greeks, as some of the most effective philanthropic organizations on campuses, will
be expected to get behind the cause.

Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are organized on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Each walk is typically 3-5 miles long. The event offers an opportunity to bring awareness to an issue that is often underdressed and to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives

A September 2015 CNN report stated that almost 31% of college students expressed that they have seriously considered suicide. This was according to the latest report from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Pennsylvania State University.
Considering that this number is up about 6% from five years ago, members of our student bodies are increasingly in danger of allowing the stresses of college life to take them to a point of no return.

What can Greeks do to contribute?
Greeks only need to turn to their individual fraternity’s or sorority’s creed for several firm reminders as to why this is a cause that they have a responsibility to address. Luckily, Greeks are the best on campus at organizing the troops, creating awareness, and raising funds for philanthropic purposes.

Purdue, Stanford, and Clemson are just a few of the campuses with vibrant Greek communities that are have already scheduled a date. UC Berkley already held its event earlier this month. It raised $16,045.20 and included 223 participants.
