So you decided to rush Alpha Phi, now what? The speed rounds of trying to memorize the current members names, make your best impression, and at the same time find a place to feel comfortable are all over. Now that you are a member, what can you expect? I spoke to newest pledge class and the recruitment team of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi to get an insider view on what being a member is all about.
A member of the Beta Alpha chapter’s newest pledge class can remember Alpha Phi standing out because, “ The girls weren’t all exact replicas of one another like they were at some of the other houses, but I could tell everyone got along great and the differences actually made everyone fit together better.” Yet, respectable, down to earth, and fun loving are a few qualities that many Alpha Phi girls share.
The Beta Alpha chapter is located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where Greek life is vibrant with 19 sororities on campus. When asked what makes Alpha Phi different from the other 18 on campus, the girls prided themselves in three main areas. The first value that seemed to define Alpha Phi was honesty. “ Alpha Phi stays true to who they are before, during, and after recruitment,” said the recruitment team. What’s better than knowing right from the start the type of girls you’ll be surrounding yourself with for the next four years? Part of what comes with staying true to yourself, is remembering your priorities in college.
Alpha Phi girls put academics at a high standard. “We are intelligent and very focused on our schoolwork, but we also know how to have a good time.” The balance between school and a social life is a crucial aspect when it comes to qualities one looks for in Greek life.
Most important overall, Alpha Phi maintains their sisterhood by abiding by their motto “ Union Hand in Hand.” They devote themselves to keeping a strong bond in their sisterhood. While sisterhood is a part of any sorority, Alpha Phi strives in that area, stating that, “The girls will drop everything for any girl in the house no matter the time or place to help,” and that type of friendship is a beautiful thing.
A last word of advice from the Beta Alpha chapter to anyone interested in joining Greek life, “ Be yourself, because we are just as nervous as you are.” They want to remind all girls, “ There are great people in every house, and so you should go where you feel most comfortable.” There you have it, when you’re on the hunt come recruitment season next fall and looking for a loud, fun, and energetic place to call home, don’t forget to check out Alpha Phi because you know what they say, “ All the best girls go Alpha Phi.”
