Attending college full time keeps you busy. You have studying to do and papers to write and do not forget about your social life. But what about a job? Whether you are trying to make ends meet or just trying to earn a little extra cash, here are some great part-time jobs for college students.

Tutor
Tutoring is one of the most flexible jobs and you can generally work on campus. Your school may have a tutoring system where they hire other students and pay them for their services or you can always manage your work privately by posting your services on various freelance sites like LinkedIn, Chegg, or Varsity Tutors. Of course, tutoring isn’t for everyone. To work for most schools, you need to have passed the class you want to tutor for and have scored an A or B. A grade of a C won’t cut it. Also, you need to have a full understanding of the material in order to explain it to a fellow student.

Freelance Writer
I’m a little bias on this one because I’m a freelance writer. Weather you aspire to be successful novelist someday or you just like writing about dogs, freelance writing is a great gig. To be successful you need to do a bit of research on where to find jobs that you will enjoy writing. Try Freelancer, Upwork, or Freelancewriting.com. These sites connect employers who need content with writers who supply the content. There is an abundance of blogs out there that want to outsource…and a lot of them pay pretty well. And best of all, you can choose when to work. There is no clocking in or even commuting to work. You can write from the comfort of your bed if you wish.
Nanny
Being a nanny pays really well and it can be a lot of fun. Depending on which family you work for, the hours can be flexible and the rewards can be great. The average pay is nearly $13 an hour and you get payed even when the kids are napping. Obviously, this job is not for everyone. If you don’t like kids, this is not the right job for you. For those of us who would love to help kids with their homework and watch Disney movies while playing Legos with them, this gig is so much fun. If you’re interested, try sittercity or care.com. There is an application process and they do check your record but having these background checks done ahead of time streamlines the hiring process.
Photographer
Photography, like content writing, is in high demand with the advent of an ever-increasing number of blogs and websites. There are a lot of different ways to get into this job depending on your interests. You could always reach out to local photographers and offer to be their assistant or find assistant jobs online. This can be a great way to gain experience and credibility if this is a career you may want to peruse someday. Keep in mind that I can’t guarantee how much money you’ll make. You could also start your own photography business by posting your services on sites like indeed and freelancer or even Facebook. Your friends and family are a great place to start your portfolio. Offer to do headshots and special events. You can also get your start on smugmug. This site won’t make you a ton of money, but you also get to take pictures of anything you want and sell these pictures digitally, so you never have to interact with customers.
A word of warning
Doing freelance work is great, you get to work for yourself and control your work schedule, but to make a profit you need to be organized and professional. Its also important to track your income and any money you are putting into your business. Working means you need to think about income taxes. There’s no boss taking this money out of your paycheck every month; its all up to you. As of 2016, if you were under 65 and were not reliant on another taxpayer, meaning you live without your parents and are not married, you don’t need to file income taxes until you have made $10,350 or more. Do your research before you start working, but with a little luck and a little planning you can turn a profit doing part-time jobs while in college. Good luck!
