Why We Need To Stop Blaming Fraternity Men

Another day, another fraternity. They get the brunt of all the blame for anything remotely bad that happens on college campuses these days. Hazing, rape, alcohol, parties, they take the rap for it all. This isn’t a fraternity problem though, it’s a society problem.

It’s a given that fraternity men host large parties, merely because they know the most people within their community, but they are also some of the most protective over their sorority and female counter parts.

I can not tell you how many times I have seen a fraternity man offer to walk a girl home. There have also been countless times where I have sat on the porch of my sorority house and the porches of other houses on various universities and watched fraternity men give up their shirt, shoes, or jacket to a girl while waiting to get her into a cab to send her home.

We put the blame on these men because it is easy. However, we really need to take a look at ourselves. We know alcohol is a large part of the college experience for many people, yet we wait until it is too late to teach alcohol education. We put the blame of rape on women for “being sluts” but as a society we are failing to teach men how to respect women.

These same fraternity men that we are casting a blanket blame on for raping women and hosting the parties where students are over drinking, are the same men that are supporting causes that are striving to make a change.

These men are the ones that are coming out in masses to participate in such events as Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. This international men’s march strives to end rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. They are taking part in talent competitions that support ANAD, the organization dedicated to the prevention and alleviation of eating disorders.

Organizations such as Consent Is So Frat which strives to promote a culture of consent within fraternities and the Greek System. This organization was created by a fraternity man who wanted to be a part of the much needed change.

As easy as it may be to say that fraternity men are the root of all bad things that are happening on college campuses, it is the farthest thing from the truth. They are some of the leaders in creating a safer environment for not only themselves but also everyone around them.

As a society we should be striving to look at the impacts that they are making and find ways to help in their efforts, instead of tearing them down.
