Why I Chose to Major in my Passion Over Money

I, like many other English majors, have been told countless times that there will be no jobs for me once I graduate or the jobs that I do find won’t pay well. While deciding what I wanted to do with my life, I didn’t choose a profession that would make me rich, I chose one that would make me happy.

All throughout high school, I enjoyed math and science. When it came to choosing a college major, I thought that I wanted something along those lines, so I settled on Chemical Engineering. I loved chemistry, and I knew that engineers make a lot of money, so it was an easy choice.

I chose wrong. I hated it. During my third semester, I lost my drive to succeed and eventually stopped caring about my grades at all. I knew that if I continued majoring in Engineering, I wouldn’t be happy. I didn’t want to be stuck doing something I hated for the rest of my life.

So, I changed majors. I followed my passion and switched from Engineering to English, and I’ve never been happier. My grades have improved, I look forward to going to class, I’m excited for my future, even though I won’t make anywhere close to the amount of money I would’ve with an Engineering degree. And I’m okay with that. They say that money can’t buy you happiness, and they’re right. Money will only buy you things, which are nice, but they don’t mean anything. Things will break or get lost, but your happiness will always be with you. Choose a job that you’ll look forward to every morning, not one that you’ll dread going to. Major in whatever excites you, whatever you’re passionate about, whether it’s art, English, Physics, Astronomy, or Education. Money is nice to have, but it won’t mean anything if you don’t enjoy your life.
