the fall of purdue greeks - from a (now former) λ

by: Gone But Not Forgotten

As many of you will soon hear, as of today (May 24th, 2016) Purdue Lambda Chi Psi Zeta will join Sig Ep, Snu, and Beta as formally suspended from Purdue's campus. Alongside our houses are Dchi and Theta Chi, on which Purdue has imposed the strictest levels of organizational probation. Beyond this, numerous other houses are on varying levels of probation or privilege limitation.

As for our situation, it is important for you to know how and why our 100 years on Purdue's campus came to an end. In October the house was placed on a two year probation with strict limitation of privledges after a person under 21 returned to their dorm intoxicated after a party and said they had been at Lambda Chi. During this investigation, the community standards board (on which Brandon Cutler resides and personally attends every hearing) recommended a full 5-year suspension, which was later overturned in favor of a two-year probationary period. At this point, the fraternity experience of half our members has been cut short, and those above (and more or less including) their sophomore year could kiss goodbye ever experiencing the way things were again.

Following more unproven allegations in February, Purdue (read: Brandon Cutler) once again attempted to impose the strictest suspension punishments on our house. After a lengthy judicial and appeals process, we were handed down further punishments in late April that included membership review and rush minimums. [CONTINUED BELOW]

In the last week of April we received word that we were being further investigated for hosting a function, with the evidence being a folder of printouts of Instagram and facebook photos collected by some member of either IFC or the university who, using a list of active members, took the time to search each active individually on social media and save every photo that showed that member with their date for a sober dinner night we had to celebrate the graduating seniors. Again, these were screencaps of Instagram feeds showing photos of nothing more than a brother and their date in front of a brick wall. No alcohol, no location tags, nothing like that. Following their further “investigation,” we received word today that Purdue’s “reasonable suspicion” has ultimately resulted in the end of 100 years here at Purdue.

This is written as a warning to the Greeks on our campus. Your time is limited, and the university is coming for you. The social media step taken proved that Purdue is no longer trusting Greek organizations, but is systematically hunting them down and closing houses with years of tradition and history on campus. There was no event, accident, or drunk mishap that resulted in their April investigation. That was simply some member of the university checking brother’s social media accounts with no reasonable suspicion, with the goal of finding something, anything, to place blame for.

Four houses are now gone. By this time next year, more will join our place. Greek life at Purdue is no longer a free, fair or safe system. There are houses currently on probation that have parties every weekend with no consequence, and furthermore houses that have huge parties every weekend –that have multiple fire alarm pulls in a month resulting in police and fire dept visits to a house full of drunk underage students—that will continue to face no penalty due to their influence and status on campus.

Brandon Cutler’s War on Greek Life is not a joke at all. Please, educate yourself and those around you by reading "Purdue Co-Op Living on Borrowed Time" by Dave Bangert. There is a strategic plan for the future that does not show many of the recognized fraternities as remaining on campus in the years to come.

My advice to you is this: Tread carefully, respect secrecy, and be weary of those you let through your doors. Do your best to get your actives on positions in IFC and student government, as well as community standards. Speak out against the unfair harassment of Greek organizations at Purdue and especially towards Brandon Cutler’s overreach as dean.

Sorry but it's not like Lambda Chi didn't have functions this year even though you were on probo. You still had tomorrow land, a Christmas party and Grand Prix and those are only the ones I went to. It sucks that you are getting kicked off but you aren't blameless either.

Lambda Chi was put on probation second semester and Tomorrowland was first semester. They hosted their Christmas party with themselves and invited no other fraternities as the sanctions imposed did not allow them to. The functions that occurred on Gand Prix were at house across the street that older Brothers currently and will continue to live in, none were held within the house. Yes, they are not completely blameless but Lambda Chi acted no different than a vast majority of greek organization within Purdue and were targeted by the university.

This is pretty much exactly what happened to Sig Ep. A picture of a few brothers with a crowd in the background was enough to launch an investigation (there was no alcohol at all in the picture). Hopefully the new SWARMA (i think that's right) agreement will help keep fraternities from getting in trouble.

Actually SARMA is even worse than RISE is, and includes more anti-Greek rules in it.

Brandon Cutler must be stopped. Greek life is a great part of our school and our university should pride themselves in the organizations that are a part of it. It is statistically shown students involved in Greek life earn higher GPA's, are involved in more philanthropy and community organizations and thus give back more and serve more service hours then students not involved in the Greek community. WHY Cutler has gone this far- with this many organizations on campus- is beyond many students and staff. Many gentlemen of this fraternity are known well on campus both academically and professionally. The sanctions placed on them may have been deserved, but the abolishment of their organization for 5 years is overly harsh, unncecesary, and unfair.

Brandon Cutler is crazy! He re-Orged his own fraternity and kicked out his own biological brother. On top of that , when I heard him speak he told us that he wants all the houses at Purdue to become dry. So we got that to look forward to.
