rushing

Is rushing a sorority really competitive? Like if you're decently pretty and smart but maybe don't have a huge amount of recs or connections will you still get a bid? Just curious about competitiveness before I rush this fall.

You don't really need recs at Tech, you can get a bid without them, but if you know people who can write a rec, it doesn't hurt. It will give the chapter(s) a heads up about you before recruitment. It's not necessarily competitive, like an SEC school is, but it's competitive in it's own way here. The 4 good sororities all have specific personalities they are looking for. Good grades are important, bad grades will get you cut, being pretty helps, and if you're normal and can hold a conversation and don't talk about weird/sensitive subjects, you'll do fine.

they can't see your grades so if you're worried that you'll get cut for having bad grades, you can just lie about it.

that's NOT true at all. Sororities definitely get information about your grades and GPA from the ICS Recruiter when you sign up for recruitment and they get your transcripts too. All sororities have a minimum GPA requirement nationally. If you're below the national minimum, usually 2.5 but groups vary, you'll get cut automatically. But chapters can choose to require a GPA higher than the national minimum too. You also have to maintain that minimum GPA while in college, or you'll be placed on academic probation. If you're a freshman, they'll use your high school GPA (usually 2.75 is minimum for HS GPA), if you have any kind of college GPA, they'll use that. Sororities will occasionally take a grade risk, if they really really like you, but don't count on it.

Also, right before the start of freshman year is the best time to rush, it's MUCH harder as an upperclassman, because most freshman leave their first semester at Tech with an average gpa of 1.6, so when you tank and can't get your grades back up before sophomore year, it screws up recruitment.

I said first semester, not first year. But then grade replacement helps, but if you tank a class or two first semester, and take it again 2nd semester of your freshman year, the grade replacement still will not have gone through in time for recruitment.

Yes, while GT rush is not as competitive as, say, Alabama or Ole Miss, it still is competitive! Send in your recs, look put together every day, of course be yourself! As much as they say to trust the system, it does really all work out in the end.

OK, fact check here: Fall 2014 All Greek New Member GPA was 3.23 (Women 3.24, Men 3.22). The vast majority of Fall 2014 New members would be freshmen. It's unreasonable to believe that the total Freshman GPA would be so drastically different from the All Greek New Member GPA (All Greek GPA and All Undergraduate GPA's are Identical - 3.15)

yeah, the 1.6 comment is complete bs, only one dude in my fraternities fall pledge class got under a 3.0, out of more than 15 pledges
