lettered houses

by: Curious

After being here for 2 semesters now i've been curious as to why there are so few lettered houses here at UD. At most schools the better the house the better fraternity. But here it doesn't seem to be the case as KA, Lambda, and KapSig are all completely different tiers. Is there a push to get more fraternities lettered or were there more at one point? Any input would be greatly appreciated

It's the law that there can't be any lettered houses on campus unless they were on the house before the law was passed

ATO had letters on their house before they were kicked off... the huge white mansion on Courtney Street (next to Harrington).

no that was NOT their house...
before my freshman year there were a few smaller houses there. One with SAEs letters on it. then someone bought it and tore it down to build that big building.

Lol maybe it wasn't when you were a freshman but that building was the ATO house at one point. Look up "udel ato" on google images, first result.

You both are right calm down. Yes that white house was ATO. But there was a little house next to it that was SAE that they tore down to expand that white house.

now kiss and make up.

What do you mean by law? is there some law in Newark which says there can't be lettered houses? It just doesn't make sense to me.... Whats so bad about a house. A fraternity is supposed to live and be together, it just seems so backwards.

But wait the Gamma Phi House and the AZD are relatively new, certainly newer than those houses, they have letters. Is the law only towards fraternities?

Both were lettered houses in the past, prior to the law which was put into place fairly recently. This law exists because Newark hates greek life and wants to separate itself from the "fratty college party town" image. It's a damn shame, greek alums donate a lot of money to this school and now some of us in greek life can't enjoy the benefits of putting letters on our house.

both of those houses were owned by previous greek life.. for example the Gphi house now used to be AGR, therefore that house will always be allowed to have letters.

There should be a campaign to go against this as it makes the greek community look fairly dismal

Theoretically couldnt the university build houses for them similar to what they did for chio and Asa

You also need to realize how much of a liability it is to have a lettered house on this campus. This isn't Ole Miss or Alabama. Each time KA, kappa sig, or lambda throws down in their lettered house is a huge risk and could spell sanctions or worse if anything bad happened. The school is out for blood when it comes to frats and having a house doesn't make that any easier to avoid. The fact the 3 of them still have their houses and haven't been booted yet is surprising in itself. Let's hope it stays that way, for the good of our struggling greek system as a whole.
