Getting ready to go to college is one of the most exciting events of a person’s young adult life. It’s a time for freedom, finding yourself, and new opportunities. Those dorm rooms don’t get any bigger, but there are some essential items that a new student needs to bring!

10. A rug

Not only will it make your room homier, but also it puts a nice little layer between you and that hard floor. You can even host game nights on it!

9. Water Boiler

For those cold days when you need a hot drink or hot water for your cup of ramen, a water boiler is a lot faster than your microwave. You can even get a coffee maker, which does the same thing except you can also make coffee with it.

8. Food Storage Containers You’re more than likely not going to finish all that pizza, so having something to put it in to keep it fresh for breakfast is a must. Also you can sneak some dining hall goodies back to your room while you’re at it.

7.  Mini-vacuum Cleaner

Your dorm may have a vacuum cleaner for the entire building, but it’s so much more convenient when you have one right within reach for all those crumbs or accidental spillages of glitter and such.

6. Fridge and Microwave Having a fridge and microwave is a sure-fire way to make sure you always having something to eat and a way to make it is hot as well!

5. Shower Caddy Even if they do keep the communal bathrooms nice and clean, it’s always good measure to have something from keeping your things from touching the floor.

4. Official Documents

Having things like your passport and social security may come in handy when you end up getting a part time job or unexpectedly end up signing up to go abroad. It’s much easier than calling to get the information from your family or having them have to send it to you. Make sure you keep it in a safe location!

3. Mattress Pad

1. Mementos of family and friends back at home Bringing some photos and letters from home will help make the transition easier, but be sure to keep some room available for new friends that will make their way into your life!
