Many Miami University students do not realize that it is the only school with the longstanding tradition of having names for their off-campus houses. For the students in Oxford, Ohio, walking down the street and passing numerous punny and inappropriately named houses is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, for these students it is more unusual to see an off campus house without a sign displaying its name.
Miami students use house names as destination points instead of addresses, and use these names when referencing different areas in town. In addition, fighting for the best off campus houses is an annual competition.
House names are creatively crafted in order to suit the location, the house itself, or the residents. For example, a house located on East Church Street, parallel to the popular road High Street, is named “At Church and Almost High”. One house near Mac & Joes Bar is named “Mac & Hoes”. Some houses are named after sororities and fraternities and are passed down throughout the years. Some houses have names with unknown origins, but are considered classic as their names have remained for decades. Some traditions, such as this one, never die.
